SCENERY:
The Forth & Clyde Canal runs from Glasgow to Grangemouth, and originally
linked (near Falkirk) to the Union Canal which ran to Edinburgh. The two
canals were joined by a flight of 11 locks, but when the canals fell into
disuse, these locks were removed. The canals were refurbished as part of
The Millenium Link project, and the difference in level at Falkirk was solved
by the Falkirk Wheel - the world's first rotating boat lift.

The Falkirk Wheel was officially opened by Her Majesty the Queen in May
2002. It is 115 feet high, and 100 feet long, and carries two water-filled
gondolas carrying boats (one is lifted up as the other goes down) 89 feet
between the two canal levels - the gondolas each weigh 300 tonnes! However,
the wheel is so carefully balanced that its motors use less than 5KW to
turn it. It takes around 15 minutes for the wheel to rotate 180 degrees.

The wheel is joined to the Union Canal via an aqueduct and a 480-foot tunnel
which passes beneath the Antonine Wall (a Roman earth bank wall). At the foot
of the wheel is the New Port Downie basin, which is connected to the Forth &
Clyde canal via a lock. The basin also houses the Visitor Centre.

See www.thefalkirkwheel.co.uk for visitor information.

Thanks to Iain Gallagher for the "ground work" in this scenery!

OTHER INFORMATION:
The Wheel object was created using the Flight Simulator Design Studio with
extensive hand editing. The surrounding terrain was created using Ground2K.
