FS9 Flight Dynamics for the Douglas DC-5 and R3D-3 as used by Boeing, KNILM, the IJAAF, 21 Squadron RAAF, Ansett-ANA, the USN, 374th Troop Carrier Group USAAF 5th Air Force, and New Holland Airways 1940-1947. 

The R3D-1 and R3D-2 used by the USN and USMC 1940-46 had 18% more fuel, 9% less power from earlier series Cyclone engines, and were probably restricted to lower operating weights. These flight dynamics do not support realistic simulation of those six aircraft. 

All comments and hints in this aircraft.cfg should be retained during use within FS9. Use with KLM_DC-5.zip by Wayne Tudor assumed else the aliases below must be reset. This aircraft.cfg is only suitable for use with DC-5.air and DC-5_ref supplied as a matching set. The text version of the handling notes is for printing and the htm version for on screen use.

description= The DC-5 was a high performance, short range, feederliner quickly eclipsed by the Lockheed Lodestar. The only airline to proceed with an order for the DC-5 was KLM who purchased four for use into Amsterdam. However the invasion of Holland caused their DC-5s to be deliverd equally to KNILM in the Dutch West and East Indies instead. By late 1941 all were in the Dutch East Indies. In 1942 one was captured by the IJAAF. The survivors were soon in use with 21 sqn RAAF and Ansett-ANA supplying ANZAC forces in New Guinea. Impressed by the USAAF 1944-45 they were then designated Douglas C-110s. One returned to Ansett-ANA serving in New Guinea 1946-47 before being sold to New Holland Airways. The prototype was converted to KLM production standard and was based in Seattle as Bill Boeing's corporate VIP aircraft from April 1940. It was impressed by the USN for VIP transport duties in February 1942 becoming the only R3D-3 until its sale for scrap in January 1946.

[fuel]

The DC-5 had tanks whose total capacity was 550 USG. Normal fuel load was only 350 USG in airline service since even at 19,500lbs the DC-5 was limited to just 10 pax plus bags with 550 USG aboard. Reducing to 350 USG allowed 16 pax plus bags. KNILM fitted 16 seats and used the DC-5 as a high performance airliner rather than as a feederliner. 550 USG could actually be loaded in the single identical VIP transport owned by Boeing which had fewer seats. The R3D-1/2 used by the USN and USMC had 100 USG additional fuel tankage for long range ferrying.  

These FDE simulate the DC-5 and R3D-3 but not the R3D-1 or R3D-2.

[WEIGHT_AND_BALANCE]

Despite being designed as a 22 seat feederliner the DC-5 was originally certificated at only 18,300lbs. The Dutch authorities subsequently certificated the DC-5 at 19,500lbs for use by KNILM with only 16 seats allowing medium hauls with this payload. From 1942 both the Royal Australian Air Force and Ansett ANA flew the Dc-5 under British War Emergency Regulations at 21,000lbs. This war service maximum was retained by the USAAF when they inherited these aircraft in 1944. The post war max gross situation is unclear, but probably did not matter (see below).

By default these dynamics simulate short haul airline use of the DC-5 by KNILM in the Dutch West Indies and Dutch East Indies 1940 - 1941.

Note that this assumes departure at 19,500lbs but since the DC-5 burned only about 600PPH during even maximum cruise the destination would need to be at least two hours away, since maximum landing weight was always 18,300lbs. When short hauling the DC-5 was always restricted to not much more than 18,300lbs.

To simulate wartime operation at war emergency weights medium hauling between Australia and New Guinea remove the // from the line below to increase departure weight to 21,000lbs. This departure weight can only be used for medium haul flights exceeding five hours duration since normal cruise is at about 450PPH.
