CYHZ – Halifax International Airport V1.0
Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada
FS2002 Scenery Enhancement

Authors: Craig Mosher, Steve Mosher

Halifax International is Canada’s east coast hub serving 3 million passengers a year. The airport is the sixth busiest in Canada, and one of the fastest growing in the country. The original terminal was built in 1955 and has undergone many changes and small scale expansions over the years. The latest project involves a 4 fold increase in the Domestic and International Arrivals facilities. I have had the privilege of being the design Architect for this project (in addition to the new control tower – 1997) and consequently have access to plenty of architectural information and access to the airfield…making this project possible.

Never having designed any Flight Simulator scenery before, we find ourselves learning as we go along. This is Version 1.0, and primarily focuses on replacing all of the buildings on the airside of the facility with accurate, custom built, photo-textured GMAX models, including a detailed terminal, control tower and a dozen or so support buildings. In addition to this, we have also developed some static scenery and taxiway/runway signs. The default runways, ramps and taxiways are unaltered.

One of our primary goals was to achieve high performance scenery with good framerates. GMAX seems to have made this possible. We have not had any performance issues to speak of (Athlon 1900XP, Geforce 3).

As we learn more about scenery design, and as Microsoft continues to release additional SDK’s we’ll continue to improve this scenery. We expect to replace all of the default surfaces, add animations and improve overall detail in version 2.
