The 247D was the final production version of this all-metal, short range, high speed airliner featuring controllable pitch propellers and NACA cowlings as well as the original revolutionary retractable main gear. The 247D entered service with UAL in 1935 after coming third in the England to Australia air race of 1934. Options included an autopilot and pneumatic de-icing boots. nOnly 13 were built, but the 33 surviving UAL model 247s were soon converted to this standard. Only 27 survived to be impressed into the USAAF in 1942 as the Boeing C-73 and 13 of these quickly passed to the RCAF and RAF. The survivors returned to airline service in 1944 and a few were still flying airline schedules in the late sixties.
