I have now started using X-Plane Version 9.... with the advent of non-support for Microsoft Flight Sims (all) and the superior flight sim programming of X-Plane, I am sure that you will be getting more X-Plane supporters beginning shortly.... I have been a user of Microsoft Flight sim going back to the start of MSFS 3... I have enjoyed all versions up to 10 (FSX)... however, with Microsoft having cut support for their Flight Sims and I think desolved the Flight Sim division, it is time to go to a supported program... X-Plane by Laminar Research is the most comprehensive program out there that really teaches you real flying... they also have what I think is the best Operator Manual in flight simulation..... the manual has 170 pages and covers every aspect of X-Plane from A to Z.... (cost of approximately $9.95 U.S..... The manual is so well put together that it is a pleasure to use as you learn X-Plane.... try it .. you'll like it.

----
X is obviously more realistic, so I use it to fly the big jets such as the 747 and like to bring it into the ramp at airport, connecting the jetway and getting fuel.

I use 2004 because I have more aircraft and I love the military jets that I can find for it.

I have both FS9 and FSX, but because FS9 runs so much more smoothly at full sliders and locked at 30FSP, I use it most of the time. Also, my FS9 installation has grown to more than 40GB with scenery, worldwide high-res mesh, AI traffic, and add-on flyable aircraft.

For now, the only reason I use FSX is for the AccuSim version of Shockwave's Boeing 377 Stratocruiser. Maybe in another three years or so I'll build another rig powerful enough to run FSX as smoothly as my current rig is runing FS9 now.

Without FS Navigator, I would not be using any of the Flight Sims!
The majority of my Multiplayer Chums only use FS 2004, with FS Navigator running in the background.
FS 2004 runs smoothly on my Computer system with everything maxed-out, so I am happy with it, and will continue using it for the foreseeable future.

FS9 is what I presently use. I am probably am facing a 'slide show' if I attempt an upgrade. BUT, PERMIT ME TO EXPLAIN:
I own a Mac Mini, and with 2 Gigs of DDR2 RAM and an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor running at 2 GHz, it's a sweet little speed demon (I use Boot Camp to cleanly switch between systems). Mac Minis don't have a provision for a graphics card, but they come equipped with the Intel GMA 950 graphics chipset, which allocates 225 Mb of the Mini's DDR2 RAM for video memory under DirectX 9.0c (it only uses 32 Mb on the Mac side under OpenGL!). This allows me to run FS9 with ALL sliders maxed, at 30 fps! Not bad for a machine you can fit in your back pocket (and, it's a Mac as well).
Meanwhile, I am looking forward to soon running FSX on one of the new generation of faster (and cheaper) laptops coming out, many of which sport DUAL graphics cards with gobs of video RAM (you'll need it!). Too bad the Mini's GMA 950 doesn't support DirectX 10!
