The Wright brothers are indeed the most famous in the United States. In Brazil Alberto Santos Dumont is considered "The Father of Aviation", not the Wright brothers. In my opinion almost everyone even those not interested in aviation knows the story of the Red Baron (Ritchthofen).

Apples and Apples.
Lillienthal, Curtiss or the Wrights?
Now, that's the question.

I came up with the subjects for this poll thinking that people would base their decisions on "What has this individual (or individuals) contributed to the history of aviation?" or "What were their accomplishments in aviation?"

If you want to talk about the real "Fathers of Aviation" vs. "The Fathers of Modern Aviation" of which no one was specific, you'll need to go way back before any of these people came into the aviation picture. (200 - 300 B.C.)

But like apples and ORANGES...

who gets credit for the wheel...the caveman or Goodyear???

I think the Wrightbrothers are the most famous. When I told in a historylesson about the Red Baron no one did know his story, even our teacher didn't know this man, which surprised me very much!

Orville & Wilbur Wright are very famous with their invetion-a motor airplane. But they weren't the only one who wanted to invent a motor plane,Charles A. Lindbergh wanted to invent it too.So there was a competition between the Wright brothers and Lindbergh.Infact Lindbergh has invented the motor plane first...but it never flew.So the Wright brothers won this competition and now they are known as the inventors of the motor plane!

The Wrights, without them, there would be no flying (and no Curtiss to build powered airplanes, and everyone else who did something with powered flight after 1903).

Maybe I am going out on a limb here, but the reason most people feel the Wright brothers are the most famous is a result of modern education in America. For me it will always be Mr. Rickenbacker when it comes to the fame quotient, he was more than just a pilot.

After the Wright brothers' flights in 1903, Santos-Dumont began to experiment with heavier-than-air machines. He constructed a vertical-propeller model, and, in 1906, built a machine, the 14-bis, on the principle of the box kite. In October 1906, he won the Deutsch-Archdeacon Price for the first officially observed heavier-than-air powered flight in Europe, flying his canvas and bamboo biplane. In November 1906, he flew 725 feet (220 meters) in 21 seconds. In 1909, he produced his "Demoiselle" or "Grasshopper" monoplane, the precursor to the modern light plane.

This makes it perfectly clear who was first in the air with a motorized aircraft. PERIOD
