This was the RAFs requirement for a four jet nuclear bomber and was initiated due to what became known as the Cold War. The Vulcan B.Mk2 entered service with the RAF in the 1960s and had a number of refinements over the B.Mk1, notably Series 201 Olympus engines producing an additional 5,000 lb st, along with an extended tail containing electronic countermeasures. This was the machine which would carry the Blue Steel nuclear missile. During the Cold War years, the Vulcan was allocated the role of a high level, stand-off attack bomber and was painted in pure white to reflect nuclear flash. From the 1960s onward, as Soviet air defences improved, the attack profile was changed to low-level penetration and the more familiar camouflage markings were adopted. 3 models and 4 paint examples are included in this file. In the mid 1970s the USA began the development of a re-usable space transport system that soon became universally known as the Space Shuttle. The Soviet Union responded by launching the development of a similar system, known to generally as the BURAN (SnowStorm).To transport the components of the Space orbiter and Energia ultra-heavy multipurpose space rocket modules to the Baikonur, Kazakhstan launch site, the Myasishchev OKB proposed using the 3M bomber as a transportcarrier. Engineering changes to the 3 Bison-B tankers selected for conversion to transports included a 7 meter up-swept fuselage extension, twin end plate square vertical stabilizers, and strengthened out-rigger struts. The heaviest payload carried by the VM-T transports was the Buran orbiter shuttle itself, weighting in excess of 100,000 lbs. Including a 50 ton fuel load, this constituted a max take-off weigh for the VM-T of over 410,000lb. The MLU M4 updates introduces a software tape enabling the aircraft to carry and deliver the latest air to ground munitions like the JDAM. In addition to the already advanced and highly capable AIM-120 AMRAAM, the super agile IRIS-T short range air-to-air missile has been introduced, replacing the AIM-9L Sidewinder. The Pantera targeting pod makes a new dimension in Air to Ground missions used together with the new HMCS (Helmet Mounted Cueing System). The Pylon Integrated Dispenser System has the ALQ-162 ECM pod built-in and complements ALQ-131 ECM pod, carried on the centre line. PIDS also enables carriage of more chaff, housed in the pylon. This model includes special Norwegian modifications to the basic F-16 like the drag chute compartment, night interception search light and a typical RNoAF weapon loadout of AMRAAMs, IRIS-Ts, GBU-12s, PIDS and ALQ-131.
