The Coronado resulted from a U.S. Navy request for the development of a maritime patrol bomber larger than the PBY Catalina, one that would have increased performance and good weapon load capability. Though the prototype first flew in December 1937, the Navy did not have the funds at that time to procure the aircraft, and Consolidated had to wait 15 months before orders were placed. During that time improvements in the aircrafts stability and hydrodynamic performance were made, so that the 1939 version was considerably improved. Variants served with the U.S. Navy from 1940 on. Defeated in the 1953 French Navy�fs contest by the Fouga Magister, the MS.755 Fleuret was resurrected as the MS.760 Paris IR (designed by Rene Gauthier), a four-seat military high-speed communications aircraft and advanced trainer. It was used extensively by the French, Dutch and other European military between 1959 and 1997. In 1955, a short lived venture with Beech Aircraft to market the Paris as an Executive Business Jet in the US market was soon eclipsed by Lear�fs hot-rod Model 23.
