FS2002 Aircraft compatibility with FS2004

Posted on Thursday, July 17 @ 15:26:25 CLT by webmaster
FS2004 Century of Flight
Microsoft has stated that all add-on aircraft designed under FS2002 specifications will be fully FS2004-compatible.

How to import aircraft and aircraft gauges (add-on and default) from Microsoft Flight Simulator 2002 into the new Flight Simulator 2004?

To import an aircraft and aircraft gauges from Flight Simulator 2002 into Flight Simulator 2004, follow these steps.

Note Flight Simulator 2002 and Flight Simulator 2004 contain gauge files that have the same file names.

Do not overwrite the existing Flight Simulator 2004 gauge files with earlier versions of the gauge files.
Start Microsoft Windows Explorer.

Locate and then open the Aircraft folder of the Flight Simulator 2002 installation.

By default, the Aircraft folder is in the following location:
  • C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\FS2002\Aircraft

Drag the aircraft files that you want to import to the Aircraft folder of the Flight Simulator 2004 installation.

  • By default, the Aircraft folder is in the following location:
  • C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\FS2004\Aircraft

Locate and then open the Gauges folder of the Flight Simulator 2002 installation.

  • By default, the Gauges folder is in the following location:
  • C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\FS2002\Gauges

Drag the gauge files that you want to import to the Gauges folder of the Flight Simulator 2004 installation.

  • (For example, for the Concorde, drag the Concorde.GAU file.) By default, the Gauges folder is in the following location:
  • C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\FS2004\Gauges

Note When you drag the gauge files, click No if you are prompted to confirm replacing the file..

    I am highly impressed.

I've transfered over 15 aircraft from my FS2002 files. I've recently downloaded another 15 FS2004 aircraft, as well as 25 more FS2002 aircraft, not to mention about 10 CFS and CFS2 aircraft. Finally, I've downloaded some land and sea vehicles (about 5) made to run in CFS or FS2002.

Now out of all these Airplanes, and Helicopters, and Sea-fairing-ships, and Land-Rovers and not to mention to skins for the existing aircraft. I only had 2 of them not working properly. And I'm thinking I didn't install them properly, so I will try again tonight.

    Personally, on compatibility. I give FS2004 9.5/10

in fact there is no way to get fs2002 prop planes and helicopters to work in fs2004 - so far i tested - even Mike Stone's Gmax Beech
1900D loose its props - so i think we have to wait for the sdk to get behind this problem

it's every time the same with microsoft - great promise at first annoucement - and nothing more.

besides all the new features of fs2004 - you may become angry that you have to start collecting again...

You're not alone with this problem. I've got many airliner liveries from FS02 and have done what's been prescibed and still have the same problems. Not too thrilled with the FS04 yet, other than the weather graphics that have been improved. The GPS screen is very cluttered. Terrain grpahic is good but the GPS in FS02 was easier to read. Has anyone come up with a solution besides what MSN has posted. Otherwise, FS02 has to stay on my system.

Plan to buy fs2004, however with so many problems being experienced out there with the transfer of fs2002 aircraft, I hope that a better procedure comes into play... Perhaps someone will try this.....After fs2004 installed.......
    1. Select All under fs2002
    2. Copy and Paste to fs2004
    3. Uninstall then Reinstall fs2004
My thinking here is that newer fs2004 files will replace older fs2002 files while retaining all other necessary fs2002 files... Remember, it's not just aircraft and guage files that make it all work... Modules, Sound, fsconv, etc.....
If per chance someone tries this,,,Please POST your results for others,,,, like myself... THanks!

Whatever anyone says, there are definite compatability problems beside guages. Props and undercarriage being the most common. I have tried lots of mods from 2002 and very few work. Only ones designed in Gmax, and actually rated as suitable for 2002/2004 are OK. We are soon to see the new version of FS (2006?) so, unless MS are kind to us, we may get more problems of the same type, and perhaps loose all chance of using our 2002 mods.
